vLLM LLM.generate() Hangs with msgspec Error: Fix SamplingParams Types

Fix a vLLM 0.31.0 LLM.generate() hang when msgspec reports Expected int, got float by validating integer SamplingParams fields before generation.

Approximately 4 min read

Quick answer: If offline LLM.generate() hangs and the engine logs msgspec.ValidationError: Expected int, got float, inspect the numeric types you pass into SamplingParams. In an October 10 vLLM report, floating-point values for max_tokens, min_tokens or logprobs passed early argument checks in vLLM 0.31.0, then failed when the engine decoded its internal request message.

The upstream issue remains open as of October 17, 2026, and vLLM 0.31.0 is still the latest tagged release. The reported failure is specifically in the offline LLM.generate() path; do not assume every unrelated timeout has the same cause.

Recognize the exact symptom

The application constructs a SamplingParams object successfully. Then it invokes the offline LLM interface and waits without a normal exception or output. Meanwhile, an engine log contains one of these diagnostic patterns:

msgspec.ValidationError: Expected int | null, got float
at $[3].max_tokens

msgspec.ValidationError: Expected int, got float
at $[3].min_tokens

The same report records an equivalent failure for logprobs. The traceback points to EngineCore.process_input_sockets and serial_utils.py during request deserialization.

This is materially different from a slow first model load, GPU memory exhaustion, or deadlocked CUDA kernel. The invalid request value is rejected inside an engine message boundary, after an outer validation step accepted it.

Why a Python type hint did not save the request

A field annotated as an integer does not automatically convert or reject every Python value at runtime.

For example, these are floating-point numbers:

max_tokens = 2.5
min_tokens = 1.5
logprobs = 3.5

The reporter identified range checks such as “less than one” or “less than zero” in vllm/sampling_params.py. These checks can accept positive floats even when the field’s intended type is integer.

When a strict msgspec decoder later encounters a floating-point value in an integer slot, it reports a type mismatch. In the affected offline path, the exception was raised in an engine input-socket thread and did not return as a clean request-level failure.

Safe immediate workaround: validate input types before generation

For code that builds SamplingParams from a configuration, JSON document or UI form, check integer-valued fields explicitly before handing them to the engine.

from vllm import SamplingParams

def require_int(name, value, allow_none=False):
    if value is None and allow_none:
        return value
    if isinstance(value, bool) or not isinstance(value, int):
        raise TypeError(f"{name} must be an integer")
    return value

def build_sampling_params(config):
    values = dict(config)
    for field in ("max_tokens", "logprobs", "prompt_logprobs"):
        if field in values:
            values[field] = require_int(field, values[field], allow_none=True)
    if "min_tokens" in values:
        values["min_tokens"] = require_int("min_tokens", values["min_tokens"])
    return SamplingParams(**values)

params = build_sampling_params({"max_tokens": 128, "min_tokens": 0})
print(params)

This is a preflight guard, not a modification of vLLM itself. It rejects booleans as well as floats; Python otherwise treats bool as a subclass of int. Leave vLLM’s own range and combination checks to validate semantically allowable integer values.

Do not simply truncate a float such as 2.5 to 2 without knowing the caller’s intent. An invalid token limit should be reported to the caller and corrected at its source.

How to confirm the diagnosis without hanging production

  1. Record the installed vLLM version and whether you are using offline LLM.generate() or the HTTP server.
  2. Log the types, not confidential prompt bodies, of max_tokens, min_tokens, logprobs and prompt_logprobs.
  3. Find a corresponding msgspec.ValidationError in the engine output.
  4. Run the integer-validation guard before sending a request.
  5. Retry using a small, valid integer token limit and confirm that output returns normally.

Reproducing the original invalid request on an important production worker is unnecessary; the issue reporter already documented that it can leave a request waiting indefinitely in the affected build.

What still needs an upstream fix

Two independent defenses would improve the system:

The upstream report suggests both. It does not establish that a fix has merged, and it does not prove that every unrelated timeout is caused by these fields.

If the engine remains stuck after the inputs are all valid integers, investigate separate causes such as model loading, CUDA work, queueing or a crashed worker. Avoid misdiagnosing a kernel hang merely because the Python caller appears frozen.
